The Indy 500 Pace Car Tradition
Every year, the excitement of the Indy 500 races through Indianapolis! For the memory care residents at Story Cottage, this event brings a flicker of nostalgia amidst their daily routines. David Morgan, the owner and president of Senior Home Companions and Story Cottage and avid race enthusiast had decided to share the thrill of the Indy 500 with our residents.
David personally delivers an Indy 500 pace car right to their doorstep. This is a gesture that would light up the residents' world in ways that he could not have imagined. As David arrives at each cottage the residents gather at the windows, faces lit with curiosity and excitement! Many residents can recall memories of watching the race with their loved ones just from the sight of the car as if they were in the stands of the Indy 500.
Since many residents are not able to make it to the actual race, he takes each of them for a ride in the pace car around the block with the top-down. If you could only see the smiles that light up their faces! For a brief moment, the barriers of time and memory seemed to fade, and flourishing moments were created.
This event has become an annual tradition we look forward to year after year. We can’t wait for all our new residents to get to experience the Indy 500 at their doorstep!
