Celebrating Growth: Candice Houston-Baker's Journey to House Manager

That's exactly what we found in Candice Houston-Baker, and we're thrilled to celebrate her incredible journey from Lead Caregiver to House Manager at Carey Grove.
For Candice, caring for older adults has never just been a job—it has been a calling.
"I have worked with the elderly since I was young, and I knew it was where I was meant to be."
Her career in senior care began at just 15 years old, working in the dietary department at The Indiana Masonic Home. When she turned 18, she earned her CNA certification and transitioned into direct caregiving, where she quickly discovered her passion for making a difference in the lives of older adults.
Candice spent more than 13 years at what is now Otterbein SeniorLife, gaining experience on every unit and every shift while earning the organization's prestigious Employee of the Year award. Throughout her career, one thing remained constant—her love for caring for seniors.
When the COVID-19 pandemic changed daily life for so many families, Candice chose agency work to allow more flexibility while her children were home from school. It was during one of those agency assignments that everything changed.
She picked up a shift at Story Cottage on a day when nearly no staff had reported to work—including the chef. Instead of seeing obstacles, Candice saw opportunity.
"I walked in and said, 'It's going to be okay—we're going to have a great day!'"
Her positive attitude, leadership, and willingness to step in wherever needed made an immediate impression. The very next day, Human Resources called with exciting news. After working alongside the Executive Director and one of the House Managers, they knew they wanted Candice to become part of the team permanently.
She joined Story Cottage as a Lead Caregiver, and within her first three months was recognized as Caregiver of the Quarter—a reflection of the compassion and excellence she brings to every resident and every teammate.
From there, Candice began training to become a House Manager, embracing each new challenge with the same servant-hearted leadership that has defined her career. Today, after two years filled with growth, learning, and unforgettable memories, she proudly serves as a House Manager, helping lead her team while creating a warm, loving home for residents living with dementia.
Candice's story is a reminder that leadership isn't about titles—it's about showing up, serving others, and making every day a little brighter.
